Dehehantong and the International Education College of Shanghai Business School jointly held a legal practice exchange activity between China and Nepal

On May 9, 2025, Shanghai Dehehantong Law Offices (DHHT) and the College of International Education of Shanghai Business School convened at DHHT Shanghai Office for exchange event under topic of "New Horizons in Cross-Border Legal Collaboration: Dialogue on Chinese and Nepalese Legal Practice under the Belt and Road Initiative." The event focused on comparative legal frameworks between China and Nepal, cross-border dispute resolution, foreign-related compliance, and other issues, aiming to build cooperation foundation through deepening Sino-Nepalese legal cooperation and exploring shared opportunities under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Delegates including distinguished gueests from Nepal, Sharada Phuyal, Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nepal, Sushilar Karki, Section Officer at Nepal’s Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, Deepak Bhandari, Registrar of the High Court Janakpur, Birgunj Bench, alongside the members from MOFCOM Training Base for International Business Officials (Shanghai) at Shanghai Business School, visited DHHT Shanghai Office. Jason Jiang, the Founding Partner of DHHT, Claire Bai, the Chair of DHHT Shanghai Management Committee, and other DHHT attorneys actively engaged in the exchange event. The conference was hosted by Teresa Yang, Partner at DHHT Shanghai Office.

Jason Jiang, the Founding Partner of DHHT, delivered a warming welcome speech to the exchange visits of the Nepalese Officials and the members from MOFCOM Training Base for International Business Officials (Shanghai) at Shanghai Business School, emphasizing the bridging role of law in bilateral economic and trade cooperation. Jason Jiang addressed Nepal’s pioneering work in the integration of legal tradition and modernity, and the environmental legislation as valuable lessons, and reaffirmed DHHT’s commitment to leveraging its expertise in cross-border investment and dispute resolution to elevate bilateral legal collaboration.

Deputy Registrar Sharada Phuyal welcomed the opportunity, highlighting the event as a valuable learning platform for Nepalese practitioners, and looked forward to absorbing insights from China’s experience in legal system development through this exchange event.

The free discussion session, chaired by Lance Nie, DHHT Shanghai Partner, addressed key topics such as cross-border dispute resolution, foreign-related compliance, and other topics among DHHT attorneys. Participants actively engaged in in-depth dialogues on differences between China and Nepal under various legal fields. Senior Partner Sandy Ho initiated her analysis with an examination of Nepal's investment environment, underscoring the progressively strengthening exchanges and cooperation between the Chinese and Nepalese legal communities. Nepalese officials provided an overview of the current legal and policy frameworks pertaining to investment within the country, including prevailing conditions in taxation, environmental protection, and related domains.

Special Guest Alan Yu facilitated an in-depth study on anti-domestic violence legislation and practical experience in China and Nepal. Nepalese officials elucidated provisions related to marital rape and psychological abuse under Nepal's Anti-Domestic Violence Act. The meeting further explored comparative approaches to pro bono programs and public interest legal service models in domestic violence cases across both jurisdictions.

Attorney Charles Liu analyzed Chinese overseas investment cases, emphasizing collaboration frameworks with local counsels. Partner Sam Li illustrated legal mechanisms for cultural heritage protection and tourism regulations via case studies. Partner Clay Liu discussed on labor compliance management in cross-border employment. Attorney Shirley Chan introduced that the Chinese government has significantly strengthened public awareness of cyber-crime prevention by enhancing legislation, imposing stricter penalties, and intensifying legal education efforts. These discussions also analyzed legal challenges and solutions for BRI projects in Nepal’s unique investment landscape.
